How many nuts are needed to assemble a car? The answer is here!

  • Release time: 2025-03-03

The types and quantities of nuts required for a car may vary greatly depending on the vehicle model (sedan, SUV, truck, etc.), vehicle configuration, production process, and other factors. The following provides a rough overview of different types of vehicles:
Types of nuts
Generally speaking, common car models may use 10-30 different types of nuts. Here is a detailed list for you:
Differentiate by functional use
Connection and fastening category
A very common type of nut used for connecting numerous body components, such as electrical equipment in the engine compartment and some conventional connection parts of the body frame. There are multiple subdivision types based on size and strength levels.
Hexagonal flange nut: commonly used in areas that require larger contact area and better anti loosening performance, such as the connection of large coverings in the front of the vehicle (such as engine hood, water tank frame, etc.).
Self tapping nut: mainly used for connecting thinner sheets, such as in the installation of car interior panels, it can directly penetrate into soft materials to form effective connections.
Welding nuts: pre welded onto the frame or body components for easy installation of other parts, commonly used for fixing small parts connected to the chassis, suspension, and other parts of the body.
Anti loosening nuts: including nylon self-locking nuts, nuts in double nut anti loosening structures, etc., used in parts of vehicles that are prone to vibration during driving, such as engine suspensions, wheel bolt nut groups, etc., to prevent nuts from loosening due to vibration.
Lock plate self-locking nut: used in some critical parts that require very high fastening reliability, such as the connection of important engine components in some luxury or high-performance models, as well as key connection points in some racing car bodies.
Slotted Crown Nut: It may be used in some parts that require frequent disassembly or adjustment, such as certain adjustable body accessories (such as rearview mirror adjustment mechanisms).
Special function category: Some vehicles may also use nuts with special functions, such as sealing nuts (used for connection parts that need to be sealed to prevent liquid or gas leakage), etc.
Differentiate by material
Carbon steel nuts: With low cost and sufficient strength to meet general connection requirements, they are commonly used in non critical stress areas of the vehicle body, such as connecting interior parts and small plastic components.
Stainless steel nuts: They have good corrosion resistance and are commonly used in parts of vehicles that are prone to contact with corrosive media such as rainwater and salt, such as door hinges and luggage compartment opening mechanisms.
High strength alloy steel nuts: With high strength and the ability to withstand large loads and stresses, they are commonly used for connecting critical safety components of vehicles, such as suspension systems, steering systems, braking systems, and the body.

Number of nuts
Passenger cars (sedans, SUVs, etc.)
Small cars: This type of vehicle has a relatively simple overall structure and fewer components, typically requiring around 100-200 nuts. Mainly used for the installation of exterior parts of the car body (such as doors, engine hood, trunk lid), the fixation of interior parts, and the connection of some electrical equipment and small pipelines.
Compact cars: With the increase of vehicle functions and the complexity of structures, the number of nuts used will increase, generally around 200-350. In addition to basic connection and fixation requirements, the increase in electronic devices and comfort configurations has led to an increase in nut usage.
Medium sized and above models: These models typically have richer configurations, larger body sizes, and more complex mechanical structures, and may require 350-600 or even more nuts. For example, some luxury mid size cars or mid to large SUVs use a large number of nuts to connect and fix various parts of the vehicle body, engine compartment, chassis, etc. in order to ensure high quality and the realization of various advanced functions.
Commercial vehicles (trucks, buses, etc.)
Light trucks and buses: Due to their large size and the need to carry a certain amount of weight, they require a large number of components, typically 300-500 nuts. These nuts are used to connect various parts such as the body frame, cargo box (for buses, the body shell), engine, and chassis.
Medium and heavy-duty trucks: These vehicles have larger and more complex structures, with very high requirements for connection strength and reliability. The number of nuts used is usually 500-1000 or more. Especially in heavy-duty transportation scenarios, in order to ensure the safety and stability of the vehicle during long-term operation, a large number of nuts are needed to firmly connect various components.
